162 / BELGIUM BELGIUM The first coins appeared in the 2nd century. The silver denier was popular through the 12th century. During the 1400s, most of the coins produced were gold. In the 1500s, large copper coins were in-troduced. A new coin system was established in 1612. Most of the coins then included liards, patards, schellings, patagons, ducatons, and sovereigns. The currency used today is based on the franc.
