BOLIVIA / 171 BOLIVIA The first coins were used in 1574, and nearly all were silver for the following 250 years. The silver “cob” Spanish reales were in use in the 1700s, followed by the silver melgarejo. The cupro-nickel cen-tavos were in evidence in the 1800s, and the cupro-nickel pesos bolivianos in the 1970s. Decimal coins were used in 1864. The cur-rency today is the peso boliviano.
