MAIL ORDER COINS As stated in the previous chapter, purchasing world coins through mail order will provide you with the greatest opportunity of finding exactly the coins that you are looking for to add to your collection. While working on this book, we have had the opportunity of coming in contact with many dealers as well as collectors. One mail-order dealer that would be of particular interest to the beginning or novice collector would be Edd and Johanne Smith Mail Order Coins. Edd and Johanne Smith have been selling foreign coins for about thirteen years. Like most hobby-oriented businesses, theirs started as a coin collection that got out of control. When they first started collecting coins, they found in reading price lists and advertisements that there were very few dealers that sold only foreign coins, particu-larly the lower-end coins, those coins commonly desired by the new or novice collector. By lower-end coins, I am referring to coins in less than Very Fine grades, priced under $2.50. They decided to tar-get their new business to this collector audience. Although they key their inventory to collector coins, they carry all price ranges of coins. Their price lists are printed in four sections, grouping the coun-tries alphabetically. The lists contain 7000 to 8000 different coins. One section is published every other month. Price lists are sent free upon request. Both novice and experienced collectors find their price lists easy to read and well organized. They use large type and a maximum of five columns per page to avoid confusion. Their price lists also have brightly colored covers for easy identification and comb bindings so the lists will lie flat on a table. Edd and Johanne’s philosophy for selling coins is simple—a happy coin collector is their product. They grade very conservatively. Often they under-price a coin or two because the grading of a sup-plier may be higher than what they feel the grade really should be. Customers prefer their grading over many of the other dealers. Edd and Johanne have customers that send change-of-address cards when they move. Customers even call them when their list is late or not received. They are very proud of their customers’ loyalty. They do not question when a coin is returned, and they refund immedi-ately. Their policy when refunding an order is to issue a credit memo for amounts under $5 and to refund by check anything over $5. 15
