CHINA / 335 CHINA The first coins, cast in molds, were used in the 6th century B. C. Imitation coins were made of cast bronze. Hoe-shaped coins were produced in the mid-3rd century B. C. Round coins with holes were made at a few mints. The round coins and the tool coins were is-sued in different denominations, based on the weight of the metal in each coin. The bronze 5-grain coin was introduced in 118 B. C. and was the standard until the early 7th century A. D. Bronze coins with square holes remained through the 13th century. The silver dirhem was in evidence in the 13th century, followed by the brass coin and the silver dollar in the 18th and 19th centuries. Decimal coins ap-peared in the 1st century A. D. The currency today is the yuan.
