C. The earliest coins were silver pieces and gold coins. The silver “owl” drachmas ap-peared in the 5th century B. C., followed by bronze coins, gold drach-mas, and gold solidi. The copper fals was in evidence in the 760s, then the gold dinar, silver ghirsh, the cupro-nickel, gold piastres, and bronze milliemes. The decimal system was established in 1916. To-day’s currency is the Egyptian pound.
