C. The silver drachma was the typical coin from the 4th century B. C., with the gold stater prominent in the 2nd century B. C. The silver denier became popular around 600 A. D. The Middle Ages saw a great amount of feudal coinage, followed by coins influenced by the French Revolution. By the First World War, paper money was substituted for gold. In 1961, the range of coins still used today was introduced.
