C., with an unusual technique called incuse, involving the use of similar designs on both sides of the coin. The early coins were silver, but from about 440 B. C. bronze coins came into evidence, then gold coins appeared toward the end of the 5th century. Julius Caesar ’s head appeared on coins in 44 B. C., right before his assassination. Around 31 B. C. the Roman coinage system had denominations in gold, silver, and bronze that survived for the next 200 years. The decimal system was set up in 1804, and today’s currency is the lira.
