430 / JAPAN JAPAN The first coins were used in 708 and were silver and copper imita-tions of Chinese cast-bronze coins. Copper coins were used for the next 250 years. After 958 no copper coins were issued, and by the end of the 10th century they were no longer in use. Imported Chi-nese bronze coins began circulating in the 13th century. Rectangular-shaped coins were in use in the 17th and 18th centuries. The first decimal coins were produced in 1870. Today’s currency is the yen.
