488 / NORWAY NORWAY In the 9th century some Anglo-Saxon and Frankish coins were in circulation, but were most likely used as jewelry. Silver pennies were minted in the late 10th century, followed by bracteates and skillings, ducats, and dalers. Anglo-Saxon and German coins were important in the 980s and 990s, but English coins dropped and Danish coins became more important after 1050. The main Norwegian series be-gan around 1047. By the 12th century, the Norwegian penny was a bracteate. The only coins struck in Norway at first were base-silver hvids. Larger silver coins were issued in the 16th century. In 1874 a new decimal system was based on the krone.
