548 / SWITZERLAND SWITZERLAND The first coins were Celtic issues of gold staters and fractions. The Swiss series began in the 3rd century B. C., and silver coins were issued in the 1st century B. C. In the 6th and 7th centuries, gold tremisses were produced, then silver deniers. In the 13th century, bracteate pfennigs were made. Gold coins were produced in the 1400s. The decimal system was developed in 1798. The currency in use today is the Swiss franc.
