552 / SYRIA SYRIA The first coins were used in the 5th century B. C. and were Greek issues of silver coinage. The silver tetradrachm was in evidence in 200 B. C., followed by bronze coins in 200 A. D. The copper fals were used in the 600s, followed by the copper dinar, silver dirhem, and silver coins and dirhems in the 12th to 16th centuries. The nickel-brass, cupro-nickel, and aluminum-bronze piastre was used in the 1900s. Decimal coins were used in 1921. The currency today is the pound.
