C. and were made of electrum, an alloy of gold and silver. Pure gold and silver coins were produced in 500 B. C. Bronze and copper coins followed through several different periods in Turkey. The decimal system was set up in 1844. A new coinage was initiated in 1934. The currency today is the lira.
