578 / VATICAN CITY VATICAN CITY The Kingdom of Italy took over the last remaining part of the Pa-pal States in 1870, and the Papacy ceased issuing coinage until 1929. The centesimi and 1 and 2 lire were base metal. The 5 and 10 lire were silver until 1947, when they were changed to aluminum. The gold 100 lire was changed to stainless steel in 1959. Decimal coins were first used in 1929. The currency today is the lira.
