COIN AUCTION SALES $99,000 for an 1825 Russian Ruble of Constantine! $143,000 for an 1862 British Columbia $20! $18,150 for an 1839 British gold 5-pound piece! by Q. David Bowers Auctions are a vital part of the coin hobby. Indeed, from the stand-point of news value, auction action captures more headlines than any other field of commercial activity. Just recently Bowers and Mer-ena Galleries (which advertises as America’s most successful rare coin auctioneer) sold at auction the finest collection of Canadian coins ever to cross the block—the fabulous Norweb cabinet. The to-tal realization exceeded $2,000,000 (U.S. funds) and many records were set in the meantime. Highlighting the event was a beautiful gold $20 piece struck in British Columbia in 1862, which crossed the block at a record-breaking $143,000. Representative of the field of world coins in general, the collec-tion formed over a long period of years by Ambassador and Mrs. R. Henry Norweb was echoed in headlines around the United States, indeed all over the world. Records are made to be broken, and this sale had its share. Focusing for a moment on Canadian pieces, the Norweb Collection included the following, giving the highest price in each of various denominations in the Canadian series: NORWEB COLLECTION CANADIAN COIN HIGHLIGHTS 1. 1925 one-cent piece with special Proof finish $3,630 2. 1885 five-cent piece.
