THE EURO IS HERE By Edd & Johanne Smith On January 1, 2002, twelve of the fifteen countries in the European Community gathered in their old money in exchange for the new Eu-ropean Community euro. No more will we see the German mark, the French, Belgian, and Luxembourg franc, the Italian lira, the Spanish peseta, the Portuguese escudo, the Netherlands gulden, the Greek drachma, the Finnish markka, the Austrian schilling, or the Irish pound. In their place will be the eight coins and seven bills of the Eu-ropean Community, all of which will ignore the national boundaries of the twelve countries using them. In addition, the non–European Com-munity countries of Vatican City, San Marino, and Monaco have also changed to the new currency and coinage, as their monetary systems are tied to those countries that surround them. Also, Andorra, which used the currencies of France and Spain, will change to the euro. Three countries of the European Community, Denmark, Great Britain, and Sweden chose not to participate at this time. In coming years, eleven former Eastern Block countries will be added to the European Community. All these countries will be issuing euro coinage by 2008. The new coins are the 1 cent, 2 cents, 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, 1 euro, and the 2 euro. The euro is equal to 100 cents. The 1, 2, and 5 cents are comprised of copper coated steel. The 10, 20, and 50 cent coins are comprised of brass. And the 1 and 2 euros are bi-metallic of copper-nickel and brass. Each country can have their own design on the reverse of the coin. The obverse of the coin is standard for all countries. The following are the subjects on the reverse of the coins by country: Austria: Belgium: 1 Cent: The gentian All coins depict King Albert II. 2 Cents: The edelweiss Finland: 5 Cents: Alpine primroses 1 Cent through 50 Cents: A her-10 Cents: Stephen’s Cathedral aldic lion 20 Cents: The Belvedere’s Palace 1 Euro: Two swans 50 Cents: Building in Vienna 2 Euro: Cloudberry and cloud-berry flowers 1 Euro: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart France: 1, 2, and 5 Cents: A young Mari-2 Euro: Bertha Von Suttner anne 1
