THE TOP 88 COINS WINNER 19 « The 1864-L Indian Head cent in Extremely Fine condition or better The Indian Head cent has long been a special favorite with collec-tors, and in its day it was viewed with great affection by most Amer-icans. Like the Buffalo nickel, it evokes a bygone era when the nation hadn’t yet reached full maturity and life was simpler and sweeter—in short, the “good old days.” Relations between white set-tlers and Native American tribes in the West were tumultuous— even downright hostile—during much of the period when this coin was being produced, from 1859 to 1909, but its portrait of a Native American clad in a feather headdress has come to serve as a symbol of our heritage and a tribute to the role that Native Americans played in that panorama. A quaint, endearing story has persisted through the years that the Indian cent’s designer, James Barton Longacre, used his daughter Sarah as his model in preparing the portrait.
