THE TOP 88 COINS Oddly, the dollar was the last silver coin to bear the permanent ver-sion of the Seated Liberty portraiture—the one that paired Miss Liberty with a heraldic eagle. The first silver dollar to carry this de-sign didn’t appear on the scene until 1840. And though it was pro-duced on a regular annual basis until it was discontinued in 1873, mintages were modest for the most part, exceeding 1 million (and doing so barely, at that) only in 1871 and 1872. Mintages below 100,000—and even below 10,000—were far more typical. As you might expect, these coins bring a pretty penny—thousands of dol-lars, in fact—in choice mint condition. High-grade circulated exam-ples—certified as, say, About Uncirculated-50 or AU-55—can be had for just a few hundred dollars, and while they may lack the siz-zle of an MS-65 piece, they still give you plenty of “steak”: scarce, historic coins in desirable, collectible condition. 29 LOSER « Big-mintage modern commemorative coins from small, obscure countries Of all the “losers” profiled in this book, there probably isn’t a single one with more dismal investment potential than modern commemo-rative coins from obscure countries, including some issuers that may not be countries at all. They range all the way from base-metal coins priced at less than $10 apiece to gold and platinum coins costing hun-dreds of dollars each or and possibly even thousands. But they have three things in common: issue prices far above the intrinsic worth of their metal, virtually no collector base, and absolutely zero upside po-tential to ever rise in value above what they’d bring as bullion. Chances are you’ve seen commercials on TV, or ads in the paper, for coins from the Marshall Islands tied to some major event in the news 121
