SCOTT TRAVERS’ TOP 88 COINS TO BUY & SELL LOSER 1 « of American History/National Numismatic C Photograph courtesy the Smithsonian National Museum ollection The 1933 Saint-Gaudens double eagle The 1933 double eagle ($20 gold piece) would seem to be a winner in anyone’s book. The only specimen legally in private hands as this is written, in October 2006, brought $7.59 million when it was sold at auction in July 2002. That’s the highest price ever paid for a sin-gle coin at public auction—nearly twice as much as the previous record-holder. Since then, however, 10 more examples of the coin have come to light. And although the U.S. Mint has effectively confiscated them, legal proceedings now under way are challenging that seizure and possibly clearing the way for the coins to enter the marketplace. If that happens, the value of each 1933 Saint—including the one that brought $7.59 million—will surely be much less than that record sum, at least initially. Beyond that, there are strong indications that even more 1933 dou-ble eagles are being held clandestinely by coin dealers, collectors, and other private individuals, probably including some overseas, where Uncle Sam cannot reach them. 28
